Holistic Therapies by Karen Harmer
I am a member of The Federation of Holistic Therapists and I qualified in Anatomy & Physiology, Therapeutic Body Massage, Indian Head Massage and Reflexology at Newbury College. I am also a Reiki Master.
I treat clients in my therapy room at my Andover home. Before your initial treatment a free consultation is given your medical history will be noted to ensure safe and effective treatment. This will take an extra 15 – 30 minutes. My therapies can assist with the elimination of toxins from the body and also can play an important part in preventative health care.
Stress can be the cause of many symptoms and diseases. High blood pressure, minor aches and pains, sleeping problems, migraine, lack of concentration, digestive problems, feeling constantly angry or irritable, depression and skin conditions such as eczema are just some of the conditions that can be caused or worsened by stress. It can also depress the body’s immune system making it more vulnerable to a number of infections and allergies.
Massage has long been used as a method of counteracting stress. By rebalancing the body it can promote healing in the whole person and can also be helpful for specific symptoms including those mentioned above. Massage can help increase mental alertness, improve skin elasticity and improve mobility and suppleness. It can also help improve body image, confidence and self-esteem.
Indian Head Massage also works to promote physical and psychological well being. A combination of various massage and accupressure techniques is used on the upper back, shoulders and arms, neck, head and face with the client sitting in an upright position for this treatment to relieve stress and tension in the body. This can produce a feeling of deep relaxation, which facilitates healing in the body, an increase in energy and a profound sense of well being.
Reflexology is an holistic therapy that aims to balance all the body’s systems through massage and stimulation of specific points on the feet. Reflexologists believe that the feet are mini maps of the body’s anatomy and so any part of the body can be accessed through the corresponding areas on the feet.
Hopi Ear Candle treatment can be relaxing and uplifting and lead to a sense of well-being, contentment and peace. The treatment involves inserting a hollow candle coated with wax into the opening of the ear and then lighting it. It is held safely in place at all times by the therapist. Ear candles help to balance pressure in the head, remove impacted/excessive ear wax, rhinitis, etc. It's a good treatment to have before flying.
Reiki is a non-intrusive method of balancing the body's energy on all levels - physical, spiritual and mental. Hands are placed either on or just above the fully clothed body. It can loosen or remove blocked energy, encouraging self-healing and deep relaxation. Reiki can be empowering even when physical healing is impossible.
